Hemingway
Ernest Hemingway died fifty years ago today. NPR did a story on him, available online here: http://www.npr.org/2011/07/02/137540700/after-50-years-remembering-hemingways-farewell.
I read some of Hemingway’s short stories in high school and did a book report on “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” If you haven’t read some of his work, you should check out the short stories “Indian Camp,” “Hills Like White Elephants,” and “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” to get started.
Reading Salinger and more
Today I read the short story “Just Before the War with the Eskimos” by J.D. Salinger. Last year I read “The Catcher in the Rye” and really loved it, especially the voice of Holden Caulfield in how he told a story. So the short story was interesting in how the small actions matter. The body language told so much with few words. Not to mention the focus of details like “…a cigarette that looked as though it had been slept on” (68).
I’ve never read “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky and it’s been on my list of books to read for a while, so I picked it up at the library and started reading. It was hard to put down to go to work, but the epistolary style has always been one that has fascinated me, what with Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” and “Lady Susan.” Letters are personal and can let the reader into the writer’s head and give clues as to the nature of the relationship between the sender and receiver.
