NaNo–Day 25
I had a successful writing session at Seed Coworking today. I wrote over 4,000 words. My word count is 47,248. Maybe I shouldn’t have extended the third test because now I’m not even close to finishing the scenes I have left. Oh well. I will continue this novel until I reach “El Fin.”
NaNo–Day 19
In my writing session this morning, my shipwrecked characters were either rescued or found the island. And in the process, one of my characters was blinded. My word count is now 36,186 words. I’m really looking forward to the Write-In tonight at Seed Coworking.
Memory Wall by Anthony Doerr
“Memory Wall” by Anthony Doerr is a must read short story collection. Travel to South Africa, Lithuania, and Wyoming. If you haven’t read his other collection “The Shell Collector,” pick up a copy. These are two of my favorite collections to date.
George Saunders and the Short Story
Check out this clip from the Colbert Report where George Saunders talks about why he writes short stories. One of my favorite short stories by Saunders is “Sea Oak.”

Salinger’s “Nine Stories”
I finished reading J.D. Salinger’s “Nine Stories.” Each one is unique and offers interesting characters and situations. I especially love it when fiction refers to poetry. Robert Stone does this in “Bear and His Daughter” with the short stories “Porque no Tiene, Porque le Falta” and “Bear and His Daughter.” For some reason it amuses …
Poetry versus Fiction
Whew. That was a long week. Yesterday I researched several literary magazines for submitting my work. If you aren’t already familiar with http://www.duotrope.com, you should definitely check them out as a source to help you discover markets for your work. They have been immensely helpful with my journey to navigate the Internet and find magazines. …
