Short Story Update

I started working on another short story Tuesday night but I haven’t finished it yet. I went to the Toledo Museum of Art with a friend Tuesday. I did some research on a novel idea and made significant progress. Yesterday I went to the Napoleon Public Library for their book sale and got a great haul …

Journal Complete

I finished my second journal yesterday. Some people call it a diary, I call mine a journal. I used diaries as a kid, but my entries were years apart. In college I’ve made more of an effort to write about my daily life if not every day, then every few days. The act of writing …

Honors Project…Complete!

For the last two years I’ve learned how to play Edward MacDowell’s “Woodland Sketches” for the piano. Since January I’ve studied his biography, reading anything I could get my hands on about MacDowell. And today I printed the final copy of my project. I wrote ten poems, each inspired by a piece in “Woodland Sketches.” In total, …

The Search for Ink and Stories

Earlier this week I finished my first short story for December. So now I’m in the lead. 1-0. The short story I finished was based on “The Young Man with the Carnation” by Isak Dinesen in “The Winter’s Tales.” Check it out if you haven’t read the collection already. Last night I made a list …

My Winter Wheat Session on Prompts

I called my session: Using Prompts to Prompt You in the Writing Direction. My session was from 9-10:15 a.m. Saturday, November 18. I opened my presentation with a quote from Stephen King’s “On Writing:” “…two previously unrelated ideas come together and make something new under the sun.” (25) So for prompts, you can give one …

24654–NaNo

I typed what I had handwritten at the Prairie Margins Write-In Friday and what I wrote in one of the sessions at Winter Wheat yesterday. So a total of 24,654 words for me. My sprained finger is doing better. I go to the doctor Tuesday for a check up. Wish me luck for typing faster …

Winter Wheat

I had a great weekend at the Mid-American Review Winter Wheat Festival of Writing. Yesterday I gave my session on prompts, which I will share in a post later this week. There were a lot of great sessions! Also fodder to discuss. The readers Kyle Minor, Ann Townsend and Seth Fried were great. Prairie Margins …

I sprained my finger…of course

Yesterday I sprained my left index finger. So I wrote on my phone’s notepad feature in the ER but I didn’t meet the word count. Good thing I hurt my left hand since I’m right-handed. Lucky too I’ve taught myself to type one-handed. Hopefully I can still finish NaNo.

9512–NaNo

Writing session: 9:30-10:22 a.m. 9512 total words to date. Listened to soundtrack Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. Wrote at home on the computer. This morning was a painful scene, but Charlotte and I got through it. I had to sleep in this morning. It’s been a long and wonderful first week of …

Preparing for NaNoWriMo

November is only days away. I’m going to participate this year, and until Tuesday I considered working on two projects (for a total of 100,000 words? Nah. Then I would consider myself insane.) But I will continue to work on my April novel, mostly expanding scenes from her backstory and exploring her present adventure. Brian …
