New Poetry Project

I ate a pomegranate the other day and wrote a poem. So my new poetry project is going to be about fruits, vegetables, motherhood and mother-daughter relationships.

Addicted to Skyrim

My roommate introduced me to Skyrim on PlayStation 3.

I grew up with Nintendo systems. I still love playing Harvest Moon and F Zero GX, but Skyrim…the stories you’ll read and the people you meet and the freedom to do quests or explore is simply amazing.

What games do you enjoy playing? What would you recommend?

Prompt–Sunday, June 24

Write.

My take on the prompt:

With the tilt of a fedora
left on my lamp, I knew
the Roaring ’20s were upon
us with the whiskey
and gin in the kitchen,
Chicago on the TV screen.
Would you mind picking
up cigars and matches
after feeding the car
its gasoline?

The Artist’s Way

I’ve started reading “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron. Currently I’m on Week 3 and already seeing improvements. I have written every day for over a year now, but through the course I’m also completing the morning pages, artist’s date, and tasks for the week.

Morning pages is a daily task where I write three pages in my thoughts in a journal in stream of consciousness. What am I thinking about that is taking focus away from my creative endeavors? An artist’s date is something fun I do with my inner child, like making a new dish or attempting to make a chocolate truffle castle and ending up with a pyramid instead because the chocolate walls collapsed.

I complied a list of the stories, poems, musicals, and other ideas. Guess how many short story ideas I have? Nearly 70. I’m off to work on a short story.

Cooking and such

There are 22 episodes on YouTube of the Lizzie Bennet Diaries. If you’ve read the novel “Pride & Prejudice” by Jane Austen or even seen the films, check it out. This is the first episode. I watch the new videos every Monday and Thursday.

I’ve been busy moving into a new apartment and making new dishes, like…

Cherry Bread

Chicken Gumbo

and corn bread, pork stew, devilled eggs, chocolate truffles, and homemade cake for my roommate’s birthday. So I’m enjoying my new kitchen very much.

This is my new necklace, with “Create” on one side and this symbol on the other.

I’m excited to have my trial pair of contacts, which I got on the same day as my diploma in the mail.

My undergraduate diploma. Now I feel extra official.

After wearing glasses for over a decade, and it’s nice to reach up and not touch them.

Prompt–Sunday, May 27

If you could hang out with your inner child for two hours, what would you do? Make a list of activities you’ve always wanted to do. Some can be free or for the price of some supplies. Inspired by Julia Cameron’s “The Artist’s Way.”

My list of what I would like to do with my inner child:

1. Spray paint cardboard.
2. Play in the mud.
3. Go to the zoo.
4. Run barefoot in the rain.
5. Make something out of duct tape.
6. Make a tent out of sheets and tell scary stories.

Forming better habits

I’ve been writing every day since January 2011. It is one habit I’m glad I have.

On the other hand, I’m still working on forming the habit of reading at least one poem and short story a day. I’ve made progress where I will read at least one, maybe two, a week. So hopefully I will continue to make progress.

The short stories I’m focusing on are by Carson McCullers. And poetry I’m reading: Sharon Olds and Robert Frost.

Prompt-Monday, May 21

This past week I started participating in a flash fiction contest with fellow writers. Given a prompt, we have one hour to write a complete story from the length of a sentence to a 1,000 words. Then we post it and comment, so it’s a workshop too. Take an hour and write. See what magic happens.
