The Letter Project–Letter from Whitney

Look at what I received in the mail from Whitney.

Prompt–Sunday, May 13

Since I’ve discovered the Lizzie Bennet Diaries, I’ve thought about the process of adapting a novel into a vlog. What story would you adapt? What would change?

For this exercise, I would adapt “A Confederacy of Dunces” by John Kennedy Toole. Ignatius writes letters to Myrna and writes his histories and the working boy stories. What if he addressed the camera instead of paper and pen? Instead of filming the rally against Levy Pants, what if Ignatius shared his plans on the vlog and then the results? I could keep the story in New Orleans, but update it to modern-day like the Lizzie Bennet Diaries.

Feel free to share the story you would adapt in the comments.

Post-graduation

I am officially an undergraduate graduate. Since the ceremony, I have slept, ate, and rested like a normal person, and watched several films I’ve never seen before. I have also become addicted to the Lizzie Bennet Diaries on YouTube, an adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice.” Check out the first episode.

Prompt–Monday, April 30

NPR has Three Minute Fiction, which you can check out here: http://www.npr.org/2012/04/29/151647902/three-minute-fiction-update-judges-favorites

What line would you be tired of after reading it 6,000 times? Write a sentence to begin a three-minute fiction, which is about 600 words. Then write the story.

Some sentences to get you started if you’re stuck.

The city is burning.

She knew it was the last time she would see his face when he closed the door.

Blue had never been Julie’s favorite color.

The window opened and the wind fluttered the curtains.

Running at 6:30 a.m. for the first time in three years wasn’t such a great idea after all.

The Letter Project–Letter to Whitney

In New Orleans I found one blue mailbox on the sidewalk, but I couldn’t remember where it was to send more letters. So fun fact: this is the only letter I postmarked from New Orleans, at least on this trip.

Prompt–Monday, April 23

Who is the owner? What’s his/her story? Why do does he/she only have one mug,  a spoon, and two knives?

Write.

Trip to New Orleans

The first plane I have ever been on. En route to New Orleans.

I apologize for my hiatus. Last week I went to New Orleans for the American Copy Editor Society conference. I’ve never been to Louisiana or on a plane before.

View from the plane.

Truly a patchwork quilt. From that angle, anyway.

The view from my room's window. Love the railing.

From inside my room. At home with my jacket on the chair.

French Quarter. Dauphine Street.

French Quarter. Horses!

French Quarter. Balconies.

French Quarter. Bourbon Street.

French Quarter.

French Quarter. French Quarter Fest. Chartres Street.

French Quarter. St. Louis Cathedral.

New Orleans Museum of Art.

New Orleans Museum of Art. In the garden.

Cemetery.

Cemetery.

Cemetery.

Aquarium of the Americas. "That way to Bourbon Street."

Aquarium.

Aquarium. As the lion roars.

Aquarium. Too many stomachs for me to stomach.

Cafe du Monde.

So excited to eat beignets I almost forgot to take a picture.

Park on Decatur Street where I ate the beignets.

Faulkner's House.

The front of Faulkner's House. Located on Pirates Alley.

The spoils of war.

From top left clockwise: Klee by Donald Wigal; The Complete Stories by Flannery O’Connor; Collected Stories of Carson McCullers by Carson McCullers; Louisiana Folktales: Lupin, Bouki, and other Creole Stories in French Dialect and English Translation by Alcee Fortier. And when I exited Beckham’s Bookshop Co. on Decatur Street with O’Connor and McCullers, one of the customers said, “That’s half of Southern literature right there.”

Waiting for the streetcar.

On the streetcar. The chair backs move when the car switches directions.

Street Art. "Wilderness begins in the mind."

Street Art.

Twenty-four states left till I’ve been to all fifty.
