Prompt–Monday, April 2

In a classroom you find an orange drawstring bag with a pair of shoes inside.

When a shadow refuses to follow

I leave my shoes behind
and say no, I will not
run another lap
around the track
or the pond in your
backyard.

These shoes ran too many
laps in their lifetime.
They asked, if in retirement,
they could rest in a closet
or perhaps a beach
and watch flip-flops toss
sand into the water.

The Letter Project–Letter to Whitney

Check out my latest letter to Whitney. I have a plan for after graduation.

Prompt–Sunday, March 25

Put something on your hands and go about your normal day. Like a sticker or ink from a fountain pen. Write about it.

Fingers can wear cloaks
to protect them from cold
with the palm as a hat
keeping out the breeze.
I look down and see
there’s spilled ink
in the streets, tears
for the words
they’ll never spell.

The end of pumpkin bread

I used the last of my pumpkin puree, so no more pumpkin bread until the fall. I finished reading Raymond Carver’s “Cathedral” and Matt Bell’s “How They Were Found.”

The short story I’ve been thinking about for months is making progress. It’s nice to have something on paper. And there’s a nice short fiction making progress.

The New York Times talked about Jeanette Winterson’s memoir here: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/25/books/review/jeanette-wintersons-new-memoir.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&nl=books&adxnnl=1&emc=edit_bk_20120323&adxnnlx=1332592360-9iMGrSZ4IDOihUZ5OtOlzw. I’m going to check it out.

And keep an ear out for more info about a writing conference in Bowling Green next Saturday.

Prompt–Monday, March 19

Embarrassment. Fear. Something.

Using these three words, write.

A skirt hitched too high
lets in a breeze
for all to see a white slip
and bare legs.

Prompt–Monday, March 12

I’m nearly finished with “Finding Yourself in Transition” by Robert Brumet. One of his quotes: “Creation begins with emptiness. It is from emptiness that new life emerges” (Brumet 87). Write something inspired by the quote.

The pale sand is ready
to bear witness to art
as plastic molds turrets.

Noodles!

Homemade noodles with olive oil, Parmesan, garlic salt, and pepper, next to homemade garlic bread on store-bought sourdough. Next time--homemade sourdough.

I wrote part of the short story I’ve been meaning to work on for months. Almost finished reading Raymond Carver’s “Cathedral.”

The Letter Project–Letters to Theresa and to Whitney

Check out the Valentine I made Theresa and my latest letter to Whitney.

New Poetry Journal

My books from AWP. Don't worry. Some were free.

When I returned from Chicago, I finished my poetry journal.

May these poems from 2010-2012 enjoy their home.

I wonder how long it'll take me to finish this notebook.

The end of Poetry Project #2

Today marks the end of my poetry project on hands, which expanded into the body during the first week.

The poetry projects have been a fascinating and great exercise. I think I’ll keep doing it.

But this time, I won’t limit myself to two weeks. I’ll work with fear until I feel ready to move on.
